Please note - Students must either choose from this list or contact their teacher for permission to research another country / topic. We are open to students making another choice, but need to ensure it is a valid topic for this project.

Students will create a discussion - include answers to the following questions:

Which country will you be researching?
Which cultural aspect will you focus your research?
WHY are you interested in this country and topic?
This must go beyond - it looks interesting. Do you want to know more about the country in general? Do you want to know more about the topic in general? Are you passionate about the country / topic? WHY? Is your family from that area? Have you visited there? Would you like to visit someday? Think about WHY this topic - among so many - has your attention.

Create the discussion response on your GACA Google Account using Google Docs. Use MLA format for the general document. The discussion should be a flowing response - not a question / answer.

You may use first person personal pronouns in this assignment.

Research Project Discussion

For my research project, I have chosen to focus on Japan, specifically delving into the cultural aspect of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. My interest in Japan has developed over several years, influenced by my fascination with its unique blend of ancient traditions and modern innovations. The tea ceremony, or "chanoyu," embodies the elegance and mindfulness that characterize much of Japanese culture, and I am eager to explore its historical significance and contemporary relevance.

One of the reasons I am drawn to Japan is my long-standing appreciation for its art and aesthetics. The meticulous attention to detail found in Japanese crafts resonates with me. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about learning more about the philosophy behind the tea ceremony, particularly its focus on harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. This philosophical framework not only shapes the ceremony itself but also reflects broader Japanese societal values.

Moreover, I have a personal connection to this topic; my family has a history of participating in tea ceremonies during cultural events and gatherings. These experiences have left a lasting impression on me, igniting my curiosity to delve deeper into the rituals, the symbolism of the utensils, and the seasonal aspects that influence the teas used. I also aspire to visit Japan someday to experience these traditions firsthand, as I believe such an encounter would deepen my understanding and appreciation of this beautiful culture.

In summary, my research on Japan and the traditional tea ceremony is not just an academic exercise; it is a journey to connect with a culture that resonates with my values and aesthetic sensibilities. I am excited to uncover the layers of meaning behind this practice and how it continues to impact both individuals and communities in Japan today.
