The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was founded in 1865 by a group of Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee, soon after the end of the American Civil War. The founding members included John C. Lester, John B. Kennedy, James R. Crowe, Frank O. McCord, Richard R. Reed, and J. Calvin Jones. Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate general, later joined and became the first Grand Wizard of the KKK.
