For this practice, I want you to find a moment from the story that you think is important for a certain topic (maybe Revenge or Pride or Cruelty).

My moment: at the end, when Montresor says "My heart grew sick. It was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so." This moment feels important to me because he seems to be feeling something after getting revenge.

My topic: Revenge

Then, I want you to make a three word statement that describes what *this moment* is trying to tell us about that topic. This doesn't have to be perfect, but it's meant to get you to think more deeply about the topic.

My 3-word statement: Revenge is unfulfilling. (He said his heart "grew sick." That wasn't what I was expecting. I thought he would have felt a lot more satisfaction. He said "it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so." But I don't believe him. The dampness of the catacombs wasn't an issue earlier for him, why would it be now?)

Finally, make a complex theme statement out of your 3 word statement. This is a lesson or observation about human nature that the text shows us.

My complex theme statement: Using "Revenge is unfulfilling," I will say "People may think revenge will be satisfying, but it doesn't erase what that person did to you."

I say this because I think he hoped the revenge he took would make him feel amazing, but when he actually got it, he didn't feel any better (and kinda felt

worse). It shows that seeking revenge doesn't bring true satisfaction or closure, and that holding onto past wrongs only perpetuates a cycle of negativity and suffering.
