For any trait, such as eye color, there are different forms of certain proteins to create the different variations of that particular trait. Each form is called an allele and one will come from the father and the other will come from the mother.
When each of the alleles come together, they create a genotype, or the genetic makeup of that offspring, which is represented by letters (GG,Gg, or gg for example). The genotype combination is expressed as the physical trait as a result and is called a phenotype.
