Explanatory Essay: The Benefits and Drawbacks of Technology
We use technology almost every moment of every day. Most mornings, we use smartphones to check the news and weather; during the day, we use computers and tablets for work and communication; in the evenings, we use smart TVs and streaming services for entertainment. There are both benefits and drawbacks of technology being integrated into most aspects of our lives.
A major benefit of technology is improved communication. Research shows that advancements in technology have made it easier for people to connect instantly, regardless of geographical barriers. For example, “The ability to communicate via video calls has transformed personal and business interactions, enabling real-time discussions that were once limited by distance” (Smith, 2023). This means that families can stay close despite being separated by great distances, and businesses can operate on a global scale more efficiently.
A major drawback of technology is the potential for decreased face-to-face interactions. Exploration of this issue leads to concerns about the impact on social skills and mental health. To illustrate this point, “Studies have shown that excessive reliance on digital communication can lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety among individuals” (Johnson, 2022). This shows that while technology connects us in many ways, it can also sever the depth of personal interactions, leaving individuals feeling lonely and disconnected.
In conclusion, technology is both a facilitator of connection and a barrier to personal interaction. Using it is a balancing act.
