You cannot add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators because the parts are different sizes. For example, if you have 1/4 of a pizza and 1/3 of another pizza, those pieces aren't the same size. However, if you have 1/4 of a pizza and another 1/4, you can easily add them since they are the same size.
