In Georgia, to become a surgeon, an individual must complete several key steps for licensure and certification. First, prospective surgeons must earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from a recognized medical school. After graduation, they must complete a residency program in surgery, usually lasting five to seven years, and obtain board certification from a specialty board, such as the American Board of Surgery. Following their education and training, candidates must apply for a medical license through the Georgia Composite Medical Board, which requires passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) for MDs or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) for DOs. Additionally, surgeons must complete background checks and fulfill continuing education requirements to maintain their licensure throughout their careers.
