Montezuma II, the Aztec emperor, died as a result of injuries sustained at the hands of his own people during an Aztec revolt against the Spaniards. After initially meeting Hernán Cortés and allowing the Spaniards to enter Tenochtitlán, tensions grew between the indigenous population and the Spanish conquistadors. As resentment towards the Spanish presence increased, Montezuma attempted to calm his people, but he was seen as weak and a traitor. During an uprising against the Spanish in 1520, he was struck by stones or arrows thrown by his own subjects and later died from his injuries.
