Apartheid was a system in South Africa that was very cruel and unfair to Black people, mixed-race people, and Indians. It was so bad that the United Nations said it was a terrible crime. But even though apartheid was very harsh, it wasn't meant to kill these groups of people. Doing that would have made the apartheid system fail.
