He needs two pieces that are 2 ¾ feet long: 2*(2 3/4) = 5 1/2
one that is 3.5 feet long: 3 1/2
two that are 1 5/8 feet long: 2*(1 5/8) = 3 1/4
so, total wood is 5 1/2 + 3 1/2 + 3 1/4 = 12 1/4 feet = 147 inches
