Eric and Cindy are avid cyclists living in cities 150 miles apart. Eric begins riding toward Cindy at noon, traveling 18 mph. Cindy begins riding toward Eric at 2 pm, traveling 12 mph. At what time will they meet? How far does each travel?

1 answer

Cindy starts at 2pm, when Eric has already been cycling for two hours.
Distance apart at 2pm = 150-2*18
=114 miles
The sum of their speeds
=18+12
=30 mph
They will meet when the distance divided by the total speed equals 114 miles, or
time = 114/30 = 3.8 hours after 2 pm.

Distance travelled by each would be time * speed of each.
