Energy naturally flows from an object of higher temperature to an object of lower temperature. There are three types of heat transfer, radiation, conduction and convection. Radiation occurs when a hot body gives off energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. Radiation does not need a medium through which to travel, so it can move through a vacuum. The other types of heat transfer are conduction and convection. Conduction occurs when an object transfers its heat by touch to another object. Convection transfers heat by the movement of fluids, either liquids or gases.
