Jennifer, I can't help you. I don't know what you did in the nucleophile experiment and even if I did I don't know the parameters; i.e., specific nucleophiles, what the experiment was designed to show, etc.
For the second question the retention time on a GC depends upon both the packing in the column as well as on the molecules passing through the column. I'm sure if you look at the molecules (polarity, molar mass, branching, and that kind of thing, together with a knowledge of what the column is designed to adsorb, that you will see the trend. Sorry I can't be of more help.
