Dr. John Sotos may know why Abraham Lincoln had lumps on his lips and suffered from stomach problems. The president may have had a rare genetic condition called MEN2B. Sotos is eager to test Lincoln's DNA. However, the only known sample is at a Philadelphia museum. The museum has a bloodstained pillowcase. Lincoln's head rested on the pillowcase after he was shot in 1865. Sotos asked to test threads from the pillowcase. The request stirred great debate among the museum staff. They are considering the possible damage to the historical piece. They also question if such testing is really necessary.

At one point, bovine high-altitude disease was causing 75,000 cattle deaths each year across the western United States. The illness is the bovine equivalent of human hypertension because it leads to high blood pressure in the arteries of cattle. Left untreated, it can lead to death. To help scientists understand this disease, more than 100 young Angus and Hereford bulls were selected to enjoy a working vacation at 8,700 feet (2,652 meters) above sea level. For four months, the animals would leisurely feed on lush, high-meadow grass in northern New Mexico. Scientists wanted to monitor the animals, hoping to determine a genetic cause.

Evidence of a new tyrannosaur species, called Yutyrannus huali, has been found in northeastern China. A team of scientists studied three fossil skeletons. Most striking were the remains of down-like feathers on the creature's neck and arm. Scientists suspect the species had feathers that resembled long, thick fur covering much of its body. The fluffy feathers likely helped keep the dinosaur warm. It may also have helped it hide or put on a show for other dinosaurs. If this tyrannosaur relative had feathers, the Tyrannosaurus rex may have had them as well. Scientists say that the evidence seems to be pointing in that direction.
