Does Russia grow sugar beets or Ukraine?

1 answer

Both countries grow sugar beets and are major producers.

Ukraine was an exporter of sugar beets to Russia, but Russia has been trying to shift more to cane as a source of its sugar, and growing more sugar beets of its own.

There is something of a trade war going on between the two countries, with Russia importing less sugar beets from Ukraine and withholding natural gas to Ukraine, as punishment for the pro-western "Orange revolution" going on in Ukraine.
