Catherine Foreman-Gray, Cherokee Nation Historian: It was a hard time and our people become very divided. And it was all because of the federal government and Indian Removal policy.

Madison Whitekiller, Miss Cherokee 2017: The removal, what really started it was the Treaty of New Echota. It was signed by a group of Cherokees who didn’t necessarily represent the Cherokee Nation. They were leaders of the Treaty Party and they decided that it would be better for the Cherokees to go ahead and go before we were forced out of our homeland.

So they weren't the leaders. It wasn't the chief and the council members who signed this treaty. And when the Cherokees had heard about this treaty being signed our leaders immediately took action.

They started a petition that over 2,000 Cherokees signed to just stop this treaty. And they took it to the U.S. Supreme Court and the judge actually sided with the Cherokees.

But the president at the time, Andrew Jackson, decided that he would not uphold this decision and removed the Cherokees anyways.
