Agonistic helping is when someone helps another person with the hope of receiving something in return or to benefit themselves in some way. For example, a person volunteering to help clean up a park in order to impress their boss and potentially receive a promotion would be an example of agonistic helping.
Altruistic helping, on the other hand, is when someone helps another person purely out of a desire to help them and without any expectation of receiving anything in return. An example of altruistic helping would be a person stopping to help someone who is stranded on the side of the road, even if they are running late for an important appointment and have nothing to gain from helping the stranded motorist.
