Simple Sentence A simple sentence consists of one independent clause. It has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Simple sentences are used to convey straightforward ideas. The boy ran to the store.

Compound Sentence A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet). Compound sentences are used to express relationships between ideas and show how they are connected. The sun was shining, but it was still cold outside.

Complex Sentence A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions such as because, although, if, when, while, etc. Complex sentences are used to show relationships between ideas and highlight the importance of various points. Although she was tired, she stayed up late to finish her homework.
