Lincoln’s 10% Plan:

The new government had to abandon slavery

President Johnson’s Plan:

Each Southern state had to ratify the

Thirteenth Amendment, and which Congress approved of it

Banned slavery throughout the nation

Radical Republicans Plan:

They wanted to break the power of the wealthy people who have ruled over the South for a long time

Wanted to make sure that freemen were able to vote

Used legislative reforms, or

I believe that Lincoln's 10% Plan was the strongest because it allowed for a quicker and smoother process for Southern states to rejoin the Union. By only requiring 10% of voters to pledge loyalty and abolish slavery, it made it easier for states to meet the requirements and be readmitted. This plan stood out among the others because it focused on reuniting the country quickly after the Civil War without too many obstacles in the way. Additionally, allowing voters to take part in the national government again helped with the transition back to unity.

Question:

Using the Tree Map from Step 1, imagine YOU have been asked to write your own plan for Reconstruction.

What would your plan be? EXPLORE the possibilities and CONSIDER the other plans that were presented. Pleas provide at least 3 ideas and explain in detail why you chose each of those to include in your plan.

Note: Again, please make this short and keep it 8th grade level
If I were to write my own plan for Reconstruction, I would integrate aspects of Lincoln's 10% Plan and the Radical Republicans' Plan. Firstly, I would implement a process where a certain percentage of voters in each Southern state would have to swear loyalty to the US, similar to Lincoln's plan. This would allow for a smooth reintegration of states into the Union. Secondly, I would also focus on breaking the power of the wealthy individuals in the South, like the Radical Republicans wanted, in order to create a more equal society. Lastly, I would prioritize ensuring that freemen have the right to vote, as the Radical Republicans wanted, as this would promote equality and representation for all citizens. These three ideas would help create a fair and just Reconstruction plan that addresses the needs of the nation after the Civil War.
