Voting for the Academy Awards. Have you ever wondered how the winners of the Academy Awards are selected? Did you know that the selection process actually starts months before the presentation of the awards in late February? First, in January, nomination ballots are sent to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For most award categories, five nomination are allowed. The Academy's philosophy is that only people who work in a particular part of the motion picture industry are qualified to make nominations for an award that relates to that part of the industry. So, for example, only directors can nominate their fellow directors. The Academy believes that people in the same field can make better decisions about who is best qualified for an award. Next, members return their secret nomination ballots. Protecting the secrecy of the members' ballots is an important rule behind the selection process. Then, a company called PricewaterhouseCoopers determines the nomination results. Shortly after that, at the end of January, the nomination results are announced. Early in February, final ballots are mailed to members of the Academy. Then, members vote and return their ballots to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Next, the company determines the final results, but they are kept a strict secret.
