A proportion is a mathematical statement that two ratios are equal. It expresses the idea that two fractions represent the same part-to-whole relationship.
A simple example of a proportion is:
\(\frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{4}\)
In this case, the ratio of 1 to 2 is equal to the ratio of 2 to 4. Both ratios represent the same relationship: in each, 1 part out of a total of 2 equals 2 parts out of a total of 4.
