Describe what do you expect to observe when the following reactions take place (3 points each):

Example.
2 NaHCO3(aq) + CuCl2(aq)  CuCO3(s) + 2 NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

When two transparent (clear) solutions were mixed, the resulting liquid became
cloudy (because an insoluble solid has formed) and bubbles were seen as well
(because a gas has formed).
Note 1. (aq) = solution = transparent liquid;
(s) when (aq) is also in the equation = cloudy liquid,
(g) when (aq) is also in the equation = bubbles in the liquid.
Note 2. You cannot tell anything about the colors since this information is not included in the reaction equation.

7. FeSO4(aq) + Ba(NO3)2(aq) → BaSO4(s) + Fe(NO3)2(aq)

8. NaHCO3(aq) + HCl(aq) →NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

1 answer

7. You will observe a cloudy solution due to the formation of solid BaSO4.
8. You will observe gas bubbles due to the CO2 gas formed.
