After Muhammad's death in 632 CE, the Muslim community faced a major split over who should lead them. Some Muslims believed that leadership should stay within Muhammad's family, supporting Ali, his cousin and son-in-law. These followers eventually became known as Shia Muslims. Others thought that a leader, or caliph, should be chosen from among the community's best and most capable members, leading to the election of leaders like Abu Bakr, and these followers became known as Sunni Muslims. This disagreement about leadership created a lasting division that still exists today, with both groups having different beliefs and practices.
