Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of glucose (a type of sugar). It takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells and involves the absorption of carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to produce glucose and release oxygen as a byproduct.
Cellular respiration is the process by which cells within organisms break down glucose and other organic molecules to release energy for use in cellular activities. It occurs in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and involves the gradual oxidation of glucose to produce carbon dioxide, water, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Cellular respiration can occur with or without the presence of oxygen, known as aerobic and anaerobic respiration, respectively.
