Culture Igor, “Immersive Cultural Experiences…”
Igor tells us about Portugal’s immersion cultural experiences and how Portugal is a historical and traditional nation that celebrates its rich culture with many festivals. Apart from festivals there are also customs and long-standing traditions. Visitors can get a sense of the vibrant celebrations and rich legacy that make Portuguese identity through these experiences. Portugal has Soulfoul Melodies, or Fado. The music style Fado, is known for it’s mournful melodies and very moving lyrics.

Geography Environment, & Lifestyle Scroope, “ Portuguese Culture”
Scroope points out how portugal has changed dramatically politically. This has been mostly as a result of the establishment and fall of its colonial empire. For example, the “Three Fs” of society were promoted by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, the dictator of Portugal from 1926 to 1968: futebol (soccer), Fatima ( a Catholic shrine in central Portugal symbolizing dedication to Catholicism), and the fado, a Portuguese folk song. The Portuguese identity still revolves around these three components. Although they may appear serious and quiet at first, Portuguese people are typically quite friendly and communicative.

Culture Brettell, “Secular Celebrations”
April 25th has been an official holiday since 1974. This is a celebration of the overthrow of the New State by a military movement. On May 1, the Portuguese celebrate Labor Day. Portugal Day (June 10) celebrates the death of Luis de Camões, the poet of the national epic. On August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated. October 5th is Republic Day, celebrating the fall of the monarchy in 1910. Since 1974, it has become very important as a holiday, while the May 28, 1926, celebration of the military coup with a military parade led by Salazar is no longer a public holiday.

Culture EDP, “Discovering Portuguese Traditions”
“There are origins that are lost to time, but if today we cannot go by without a conventual, delicious sweet for dessert, if we cannot dispense the sardines in the festivities of the popular saints, or even if we like to decorate our houses with the famous carpets from Arraiolos, it's because someone created these traditions, that were passed along until they reached us.”

Culture Gypsy Warrior, “Exploring Portuguese Culture…”
“The Age of Discoveries (15th and 16th centuries): Portugal was a major player in the Age of Discoveries, a period of European exploration and colonization of the New World, Africa, and Asia.
