- For each of the 5 Cultural groups identified, give at least two things that are associated with them
- Name at least 2 cultural differences for each of the groups as well
- Where does the majority of our tourists come from?
- Name 2 verbal and 2 non-verbal ways of communicating with others
- What are customer needs and how should we incorporate this in our dealings with others on a day-to-day basis in the workplace if we want to be culturally sensitive and respectful?

What is Culture?

Definition: Culture refers to the shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that characterize a group or society. It encompasses the ways in which people live, interact, and understand the world around them.

Example: In traditional Zulu culture, singing and dancing are vital in ceremonies, showcasing their rich heritage and community values.


Cultural Groups in South Africa

    • Associated Elements:

      • Ukweshwama (a cultural ritual)
    • Cultural Differences:
      • Language: Zulu is spoken by millions but may be unfamiliar to non-Zulu speakers.
      • Communal living: Zulus often prioritize family and community over individualism.

    • Associated Elements:
      • Xhosa initiation rituals (ucansi)
      • Traditional attire (beaded necklaces and garments)
    • Cultural Differences:

      • Mixed identities: Many Coloured individuals may identify with multiple cultural backgrounds.
      • Unique cuisine: A blend of cultural influences in traditional dishes.

Tourist Origins

The majority of tourists in South Africa come from Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, as well as from the United States and neighboring African countries.
