The goal of the Web Privacy Project is to make it simple for users to learn the privacy practices of a Web site and thereby decide whether to visit the site. Site owners will electronically “define” their privacy practices according to a set of specifications. Users will enter their own preferences through settings on their browsers. When a user attempts to visit a site, the browser will read the site’s practices. If those practices match the user’s preferences, the user will seamlessly enter the site. However, if the site’s practices do not match the user’s preferences, the user will be asked whether he or she wishes to visit the site.
