Root cells are, in fact, able to photosynthesize using the small amount of sunlight that can penetrate through the dirt. The chloroplasts in roots are the sites of photosynthesis while the mitochondria are the organelles that convert food energy to ATP energy.

"The most likely path for the cells of the roots to get their energy would be from the process of cellular respiration which, will happen in the mitochrondria. During this the roots would get their energy from breaking down small glucose molecules." was my answer
