Chelsea Takes an Art Class

Thomas Marlin

Chelsea's mother was an artist. Although she has wanted Chelsea to like art too, Chelsea had just never been interested. She would rather play outside with her friends. When Chelsea's mom signed her up for a summer art class, Chelsea wasn't happy. She didn't want to miss out on play time. Chelsea's mom said that art class would be fun, and that she would make new friends there.

On the first day of class Chelsea and her mom met the art teacher, Mr. Anderson. He spoke in a soft voice and seemed kind. He was very tall. His hair was long and red, and he had it tied back in a ponytail.

Mr. Anderson knew that Chelsea was worried about being bored at art class. He told her that art was a wonderful way to let people know what you like and how you feel. Mr. Anderson said that art class would be fun. Chelsea looked around the classroom and saw other students were working quietly on their drawings and paintings. She wasn't used to such quiet. She was used to running around and making a lot of noise. Chelsea didn't know if she would be able to draw, and she wasn't sure she agreed that art class was fun.

Mr. Anderson showed Chelsea to her desk. He gave her some paper, pencils, paintbrushes, and paints. He told her she could draw or paint anything she liked, as long as it came from her heart. Then Mr. Anderson walked around the classroom to see if any of the other students needed his help.

Chelsea stared at the blank paper and the colorful pencils. She didn't have any ideas about what she should draw. She finally picked up a pencil and began to draw what was in her heart. Chelsea drew a picture of a big field filled with flowers. In the field she drew four children. She gave them bright clothing and colored hair. One of the children had hair just like Chelsea's.

Mr. Anderson came to her desk to see how she was doing. "Chelsea, what is this?" he asked when he saw her drawing.

"This is what's in my heart," Chelsea explained. "It's me and my friends playing in the field by my house. It's what I love to do most."

Mr. Anderson looked closely at Chelsea's drawing. "I had no idea that you were such a talented artist!" he said.

Chelsea smiled widely at Mr. Anderson. She was excited to take her drawing home to show her mom. She couldn't wait to draw another picture with Mr. Anderson.
