Why doesn’t the narrator tell us why the professor’s kids are robbing? She doesn’t give a reason, what can we infer the reasons are?

It is not clear why the professor's kids are robbing, but it is possible to infer that they are doing it out of desperation or financial need. It is also possible that they are doing it out of a sense of rebellion or to prove something to themselves or to their father.
