I feel that Beowulf is a boastful glory seeker because he sailed into town so sure of himself and the fact that he could and would defeat Grendel and Grendel's mother. Also he felt the need to boast. Even though he admits to "losing" that race, he still finds a way to turn it around to make himself seem like the hero. I say that because why else would he be risk his own life for others? Beowulf wanted to be noticed as a strong brave man who can kill monsters stronger than him. Beowulf boasted how he drove five great giants into chains.
