Literary Analysis of Song of Becoming.
Song of Becoming by Fadwa Tuqan is talking about growing up. Becoming legends. It’s about what happens after growing up. It starts off with “…they are only boys who used to frolic and play….”
In this poem the author uses a lot of metaphors as an example for the boys and growing up. One of the lines is “….They’ve grown to become trees plunging deep roots into earth….” This line is basically saying they have grown old and a part of this world, they are wise and strong. They have seen so much of history.
The author uses Symbolism a lot in this. The author states “…they grew into vaulting bridges, they grew and grew, becoming larger than all poetry…” This symbolizes that they have become a part of history, they are the buildings, the bridges, they became part of the world our children are in today.
This poem talks about the cycle of life. As children, as adults, and as history. This poem sees it as them becoming legends of time, becoming the world itself.
