Puritans mainly wrote for instruction or inspiration rather than for amusement or diversion. They wrote mostly on religion. Thus, Puritan works reflect more inward than outward. Some examples of Puritan writings include John Smith’s The General History, William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation, Anne Bradstreet’s poems “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and “Upon the Burning of Our House,” Edward Taylor’s “Huswifery,” and Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Like most Puritan works, the examples of these Puritan writings are pervaded by three central beliefs: grace, which is shown in the works of Taylor and Edwards; standard of plainness in language, which is shown in the works of Bradstreet and Taylor; and conviction of a divine mission, which is shown in the works of Bradford and Smith.
