Can someone help me with steps showing

select approximate value of x that are solutions to f(x)=0

f(x)=-7x^2 + 5x + 9

1 answer

The x of the vertex is -b/(2a) = -5/-14 = appr 1/3
f(1/3) = -7/9 +5/3 + 9 , which is above the x-axis, so there are two real and distinct solutions.
try some simple x's
f(0) = 9
f(1) = -7+5+9 = 7
f(2) = -28 + 10 + 9 = -9
so there is a solution between 1 and 2
f(-1) = -7 - 5 + 9 = -3
so there is another between 0 and -1

(actual answers
x = (-5± √277)/-14 = appr -.8 or appr. 1.5 )
