Can someone help me? I am try to make a correct sentence with this.

With machetes, the explorers cut their way through the tall grasses to the edge of the canyon. Then they began to lay out the tapes for the survey.

What's wrong with what you have written?
Not sure if I should put a comma after canyon and then ad the word and or could it be correct.
It is correct as it is -- two complete sentences. Putting a comma in there would create a run-on (comma splice).
