should have been -1/2a - a and you also dropped the b in 8 3/4b

I am not crazy about the solution done in parts.
Better form would be

– ½ a + ¾ b – (a – 8b)
= -1/2a + 3/4b - a + 8b
= -1/2a - a + 8b + 3/4b
= -3/2a + 35/4b
or
= -1 1/2a + 8 3/4b
Ok thanks so much!!
