At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, millions of people emigrated to the USA as they wanted to escape from poverty, unemployment, and political and religious persecution. Most immigrants were Italians, then came Austro-Hungarians, Russians, Germans and British. The journey to the USA, which generally took two weeks, was a nightmare because the conditions on ships were terrible. If you were poor and had no money to get a cabin you had to sleep and eat on the deck. When the immigrants arrived in New York at Ellis Island, they got a ferry to the main immigration building. There they did medical examinations on all immigrants to find people with contagious diseases. New immigrants found it difficult to find work because they didn’t speak the language. They begged for money on the streets but many people saw them as a threat. Nowadays Ellis Island is a museum in memory of those immigrants. It is located in New York harbor near the Statue of Liberty. Examples of possessions of the immigrants brought with them, among which a lot of their suitcases, are displayed on the second floor. All the immigrants’ details are stored on a computer and searches are done by people looking for their ancestors.
