5x + 6y = 18
Subtract 5x from both sides.
6y = 18 - 5x
Divide by 16
y = (18-5x)/6
or 3 - (5/6)x

Simply plug in 12 for x...
y = (-5/6)(12) + 3 = -10 + 3 = -7
y = (-5/6)(12) + 3 = -10 + 3 = -7
