why is it important that you follow the steps rather than solve the problem from left to right?I have no clue. this is my first time taking algebra

The language of Algebra is precise, and built into it is an expectation that the user will follow the order of operations rules. Going from left to right is not in those rule, and can lead to erroneous results.
You have to follow the Order of Operations. Try this phrase out. "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" PEMDAS
