Since F = G*m1 * m2 / r^2
If m1 doubles and r decreases by 1/2, you have
G * 2m1 * m2 / (r/2)^2 = 8G m1 m2 / r^2
so, 8 is correct
If you just do the math, you don't have to wonder.
