One Wednesday morning, Jacob awoke to his cat’s meow. Tangelo usually didn’t perch himself on Jacob’s pillow to demand breakfast unless it was the weekend when Jacob got to oversleep. With his heart racing as he suddenly realized that his alarm didn't go off, Jacob tossed aside his sheets and leapt out of bed, causing Tangelo to bolt off the pillow. He hadn’t been tardy to school yet that year, and he wanted to keep his record pristine. His clock read 7:33 as he tossed a handful of cat food in Tangelo’s bowl and hastily pulled his green polo shirt and khaki pants off their hangers. There was no time to walk to school if he was going to make it by 7:45. He would have to run.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door as Jacob was pulling his shirt over his head. “Good morning. Are you still here?” asked his mustached dad.
Panting, Jacob replied, “Yes, Sir. I overslept.”
Mr. Levine calmly glanced at his watch. “Why don’t I drive you on my way to work? There’s some leftover toast that you can eat for breakfast in the car.”
The clock in the car read 7:39 as Mr. Levine pulled out of the driveway. Jacob slowly chewed his toast, sipped his bottle of orange juice, and relaxed, because it would only take about two minutes to drive to school. He was wiping toast crumbs off his shirt when his dad suddenly hit the brakes.
“Huh,” Mr. Levine remarked as he stroked his chin. “There’s a traffic jam for some reason.”
A patrol car sat in the middle of the intersection with its lights flashing. A policeman was waving a fire truck onto the scene of an accident as the blaring siren intensified.
Jacob pulled himself up in his seat and saw his school in the distance.
“It looks like somebody had a wreck,” Mr. Levine said as he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.
“Oh, no,” Jacob said, wearily letting out a sigh. As he slumped back down in the car’s leather seat, he saw that the clock read 7:43. “Dad, something needs to change.”
