The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) form the foundation of Islam, a major world religion that emerged in the 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula. Born in Mecca around 570 CE, Muhammad belonged to the Quraysh tribe. He grew up in a society characterized by polytheism, tribal loyalties, and social injustice.
At the age of 40, Muhammad began receiving revelations from Allah (God) through the angel Gabriel. These revelations, which continued over the next 23 years, were eventually compiled into the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The core messages of his teachings include the oneness of God (Tawheed), the importance of faith and worship, moral and ethical conduct, social justice, and compassion.
Muhammad emphasized the need for community and the importance of compassion and charity (Zakat). His teachings also addressed issues such as the rights of women, the treatment of the poor, and the importance of honest dealings.
His prophethood was marked by both confrontation with the established social order and efforts to build a community of believers. After facing persecution in Mecca, he and his followers migrated to Medina in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra, marking the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad established a thriving community and became a political leader, further spreading the teachings of Islam.
He passed away in 632 CE, but by that time, Islam had spread across the Arabian Peninsula, laying the groundwork for its expansion into other parts of the world. The teachings of Muhammad continue to guide the lives of millions of Muslims today.
