Dialogue breaks up the narration and can add depth to characters. Some of the things a writer can convey through dialogue are:
-
Character Personality and Background: Characters' speech patterns, choices of words, and the topics they choose to discuss can reveal a lot about their personality, upbringing, and values. For example, a character who uses formal language may come from a privileged background, while another who uses slang may have a more casual or street-smart demeanor.
-
Conflict and Tension: Dialogue can create and escalate conflict between characters, showcasing differing opinions, emotions, and desires. The way characters interact through dialogue can create tension, drive the plot forward, and indicate underlying issues that may not be explicitly stated through narration.
