1 answer

Between 1808 and 1826, most of the former Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas achieved independence. However, the two exceptions during this period were Cuba and Puerto Rico. These territories remained under Spanish rule until the late 19th century. Cuba gained independence in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, and Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory in the same year, but it did not achieve full independence.
