Being succesful in college means students must find ways to stay motivatied. Some ways to stay motivated are sports and extracurricular activities.

I am writing an essay-- can you suggest any ideas on this topic?

is there a particular sport or extracurricular that has changed your life? do you agree or disagree with the topic? do you enjoy staying busy with different activites, or do you prefer a slower-paced life? Etc...

Hmmm. If sports or extracurricular activites are ones motivations to get an education, something is greatly wrong.

The purpose of college is to become educated. If one is not motivated to do that, they are in the wrong place. Sometimes motivations help one commit to doing specific tasks, such as write a paper, study for a test, finish a project, but these are sub tasks to getting an education. One has to want it, to get it. So to me, the main idea is for the student to determine if they want it or not. That requires introspection and self analysis. Many don't have the fortitude to examine themselves.
Here is what I suggest for the essay topic:
How to use behaviourial modification to stick to a study and project schedule. You can find plenty on that subject, and in the real world, it has meaning.

wow i would have never thought of that for an essay topic. it is a wonderful idea.
