One of the reaction types you memorize. acid + base = salt + water.
base (FeO) + acid(HClO4) = salt [Fe(ClO4)] + water (H2O).
Because the oxide ion is basic, metal oxides react readily with acids.
(a) Write the net ionic equation for the following reaction. (Use the lowest possible coefficients. Include states-of-matter under SATP conditions in your answer.)
FeO(s) + 2 HClO4(aq) Fe(ClO4)2(aq) + H2O(l)
i know the ansewr is FeO(s) + 2H^+(aq) --> Fe^2+(aq) + H_2O(l)but i do not know why. how do you know that HClo4 and Feclo4 split?

Use the solubility rules. If a compound is aqueous it splits into its ions, while if it is a solid (like FeO) or a liquid (like H2O) they ions do not separate. Hope this helps!
When dealing with acids and dissociating, remember that only certain acids dissociate. Those are the strong acids and they are: HCl, HBr, HI, NHO_3, H_2SO_4, HClO_3, and HClO_4. All other acids not listed are weak acids. Perchlorate splits because it is a strong acid. Remember that even if it says it is aqueous because it is an acid (all acids are aqueous), it may not dissociate because it could be a weak acid!
According to solubility rules, all soluble salts dissociate, and FeClO_4 is considered a soluble salt. Hope this helps!
