Ether is the best answer, but I assure you it did not come about because of being puzzled about the phenomenon of energy transmission. The concept of ether was created because folks had no idea what a vacumn was, especially a vacumn void created by gravity. Gravity was not recognized as being associated with the mass then, later Newton discovered that relationship about 2000 years after the Greeks invented the "aether" concept.
Your text stinks, me thinks, if it teachs such nonsense as in the last two questions.
