Axel Visits Grandpa

A. Gautam

Axel loved and feared Thursdays. He loved going to visit his grandfather at the nursing home. He feared seeing his grandfather who was rapidly losing his memory. Grandpa Arnie didn’t even smile at Axel the last time he was there. Even a month ago, Grandpa Arnie almost shouted with joy when Axel opened the door and walked in. After all, Axel was his favorite grandchild.

“Grandpop,” Axel said, as he slowly entered the room with his mother. He gazed at his grandfather the whole time. “Hello.” Axel greeted his grandfather in a soft voice. What if he has completely forgotten me? Axel was afraid to even think of the possibility.

Grandpa Arnie was playing cards alone on the reclining chair. His glasses dangerously rested on the tip of his nose. He slightly turned to face the boy. The red hair that needed a trim, the soft smile on a gentle face, and the school uniform told him who the boy could be. When the boy came closer and gently pushed the glasses up on his nose, Grandpa Arnie remembered the smell of the boy. He wiped the sweat on the boy’s nose and pulled the boy up close to sit on his lap.

“I remember you. I remember always loving you,” Grandpa Arnie said to Axel. “I remember tickling you until you begged me to stop.” Then, he slowly raised his long fingers and aimed for the boy’s armpits.

Axel laughed until even the hallway echoed with joy.
