Assignment: Common Denominators Investigation

Music notes are one application of using fractions in the real world. The different types of notes show you the duration of the note which is how long the sound is. A half-note is half the duration of a whole note. A quarter note is ¼ the duration of a whole note and so on. Here is what the different types of notes look like.

1. How would you represent 3 quarter notes as a fraction?

2. How many sixteenth notes would be needed to have the same duration as 3 quarter notes? Represent this as a fraction

3. How would you represent 4 eighth notes as a fraction?

4. How many quarter notes would have the same duration as 4 eighth notes? Represent this as a fraction.

5. Rewrite each of the following durations using sixteenth notes. Write in words and as a fraction:
a. 3 quarter notes

b. 5 eighth notes

c. 1 half note

6. Rewrite each of the following durations using eighth notes. Write in words and as a fraction:
a. 1 quarter note

b. 1 half note

c. 1 full note

7. Draw using the note symbols 2 different ways to show a duration of 3 eighth notes.

1 answer

1. The representation of 3 quarter notes as a fraction would be 3/4.

2. To have the same duration as 3 quarter notes, you would need 12 sixteenth notes. This can be represented as 12/16 or simplified to 3/4.

3. 4 eighth notes can be represented as 4/8 or simplified to 1/2.

4. To have the same duration as 4 eighth notes, you would need 2 quarter notes. This can be represented as 2/4 or simplified to 1/2.

5.
a. 3 quarter notes in terms of sixteenth notes is equivalent to 12 sixteenth notes or 12/16.
b. 5 eighth notes in terms of sixteenth notes is equivalent to 20 sixteenth notes or 20/16.
c. 1 half note in terms of sixteenth notes is equivalent to 8 sixteenth notes or 8/16, which can be simplified to 1/2.

6.
a. 1 quarter note in terms of eighth notes is equivalent to 2 eighth notes or 2/8, which can be simplified to 1/4.
b. 1 half note in terms of eighth notes is equivalent to 4 eighth notes or 4/8, which can be simplified to 1/2.
c. 1 full note in terms of eighth notes is equivalent to 8 eighth notes or 8/8, which simplifies to 1.

7. Two different ways to show a duration of 3 eighth notes using note symbols would be:
- Three eighth notes connected together with a beam.
- Three eighth notes placed next to each other without a beam, but with a small flag on the end of each note.
