ASSIGNMENT 5 RESEARCH REPORT (FINAL)

Final assessment: Mini research project, no formal exam
Students must identify an individual who is part of a social movement to interview.
They are made aware of this in the beginning of the semester, so should they wish to start arranging interviews with people back home to conduct interviews with during holidays, they can do so.
The students are welcome to interview other students that identify with one or more social movements (especially involved in student movements), or other activists, lecturers, elders, trade unionists etc. who are involved in one or more movements.
In a write up:
provide a brief history on the movement and their broader local or global context;
provide a brief methodology discussion: what research method/s were used, what ethical considerations did you make, how were the discussions/ interviews done and recorded? What difficulties did you encounter and how did you come up with solutions for them?
share some of the insights and life histories shared by the interviewee/participant, and what (if any) theoretical framework guides their activism;
assess how the participant reflects (is similar to) or challenges (differs from) the theories and case studies we studied in class.

Assessment length: 4-5 pages of the report itself (excluding references).
References: Minimum 10 sources (max 2 reliable internet sources allowed; see referencing guide)

Explain the above information in steps to make it clear

1 answer

Step 1: Identify an individual who is part of a social movement to interview. This person can be someone involved in student movements, activism, trade unions, or any other social movement that interests you. You can start arranging interviews with individuals back home or within your community.

Step 2: Conduct a brief history on the social movement that the individual is part of. Provide context on the broader local or global significance of the movement. Research its goals, tactics, and impact.

Step 3: Discuss your research methodology. Explain what research methods were used for the interview, such as open-ended questions or structured interviews. Consider any ethical considerations you made during the interview process. Describe how the discussions/interviews were conducted and recorded. Discuss any difficulties encountered during the interview process and how you resolved them.

Step 4: Share insights and life histories shared by the interviewee. Mention any theoretical framework that guides their activism. Discuss key points raised during the interview, personal experiences, and motivations for involvement in the social movement.

Step 5: Evaluate how the participant reflects or challenges theories and case studies studied in class. Compare and contrast the interviewee's experiences and perspectives with the theories discussed in the course. Analyze similarities and differences, and reflect on the insights gained from the interview.

Step 6: Write a 4-5 page research report summarizing the above information. Include a minimum of 10 sources in your references (with a maximum of 2 reliable internet sources). Use proper referencing guidelines and formatting for the report. Ensure clarity, coherence, and critical analysis in your writing.
